A hunting, gathering and swidden-farming people of the lowland forest of Jambi, chiefly Bukit Duabelas and Bukit Tigapuluh, whose life is bound to a forest cover that continues to contract.
Melangun
Melangun is the departure of a band from a place after a death, leaving it for a long period. It is not seasonal movement but an act of mourning that redraws a group's map of life. Where the forest into which one would melangun has become plantation, the obligation becomes impossible to discharge properly — one of the clearest ways in which loss of land becomes loss of adat.
Living space
Since the 1980s the lowland forest cover of Jambi has been converted to oil palm and industrial timber plantation. The designation of Bukit Duabelas National Park in 2000 gave legal protection to part of the territory, but national park status itself restricts some subsistence practices, so that protection and restriction arrive through the same door.
