The narrative of a princess who, to avert war among her suitors, casts herself into the sea and returns each year as the nyale worms — the narrative that accounts for the Bau Nyale ceremony.

Narrative and ceremony

The most widely circulated form names Mandalika a princess of the kingdom of Tonjang Beru, sought by many rulers. To prevent bloodshed she gathered all parties at Seger beach and cast herself in, declaring that she would return to everyone. The appearance of nyale on Lombok's south coast is then read as her return.

Tellings differ on the name of the kingdom, the number of suitors, and whether Mandalika speaks before or after casting herself in. Local tellers do not treat these differences as errors.
