The Panji cycle

The Panji stories are not one story but a structure used repeatedly: a prince of Janggala and a princess of Kadiri are betrothed, separated before they meet, wander each under a disguised name and appearance, confront one another without recognition, and are finally reunited. The characters' names change — Inu Kertapati, Panji Asmarabangun, Candrakirana, Sekartaji — and what stays is the structure.

Because the form is a structure and not a text, it can admit new characters, new settings and new resolutions without ceasing to be Panji. That is what explains the spread described below, and why the number of Panji plays cannot be counted.

Panji spread from eastern Java to Bali, Lombok, the Malay Peninsula, southern Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar, in manuscripts, in wayang, in masked dance and in temple relief. In Thailand it is known as Inao and became court performance; in Cambodia and Myanmar it entered by the same routes. Panji narrative reliefs appear on a number of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century East Javanese temples, and their presence shows the story was already established under Majapahit.

In 2017 Panji manuscripts from Indonesian, Malaysian, Dutch, British and Cambodian collections were listed together in UNESCO's Memory of the World — a rare joint cross-national listing, and in this case the right one, since the corpus does not sit in one country and never did.
