The narrative is attached to a specific place at Air Manis and to the structure of matrilineal obligation. Its bearing on merantau and on severance from the maternal line cannot be explained by an imported tale.

Scholarly position
The pattern of an undutiful child petrified by a curse is recorded in the Malay Peninsula, Borneo and the Philippines in nearly the same sequence. What is distinctively Minangkabau is its placement within the merantau framework, not its plot.
