Printed cloth sold as batik Open

In the market it is the word batik on printed cloth that makes buyers think the price of hand-drawn cloth is unreasonable. If the encyclopedia uses the same term without distinguishing, it joins in equating two things that differ by months of work.

The technique section states the definition used in the UNESCO inscription and records printed cloth as not batik under it, with the market term noted as a market term. The name and the wearing are strong, and batik cloth is worn more widely than twenty years ago. What is assessed here is the making: the number of hand-batik workers is falling and their age rising, because a day at the canting does not pay what other work pays, and passing the craft to children is seldom encouraged by the makers themselves.
