The name and the wearing are strong, and batik cloth is worn more widely than twenty years ago. What is assessed here is the making: the number of hand-batik workers is falling and their age rising, because a day at the canting does not pay what other work pays, and passing the craft to children is seldom encouraged by the makers themselves.
